At the center of the mesmerizing rolling hills, resided a young shepherd. His life was essentially pure, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was mainly to tend to his flock of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the wind among the lone tree on the mountaintop were his only companions. Day after day, guarding his wards inculcated in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. In one such instance from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plot.
Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy opted to used this fear check here and played a prank on the villagers.
One day he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no wolf.
The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This game persisted for a few more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did attack the flock. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is difficult to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
